Zagora is a desert town in Morocco's Dr?a Valley, known as a gateway to palm oases, historic caravan routes, fortified villages, and journeys toward the Sahara.
Zagora is a desert town in the Draa Valley of southern Morocco, famously marked by the signpost that reads 'Tombouctou 52 jours en chameau' (Timbuktu 52 days by camel). It is the last major town before the Sahara proper and serves as the gateway for expeditions into the great sand sea. The surrounding Draa Valley is a lush palm oasis stretching over 200 kilometers, dotted with ancient ksour (fortified villages) and kasbahs. Zagora's Sunday souk is famous for its vibrant Berber market, and the nearby Jebel Zagora mountain offers spectacular views of the desert landscape.
Zagora was for centuries a vital stop on the trans-Saharan caravan route to Timbuktu. The name 'Zagora' is believed to derive from the Berber word for 'high place'. The town grew around the trade in salt, gold, slaves, and other goods that crossed the Sahara.

The best times to visit are spring (March-May) and fall (September-November). Summer temperatures can exceed 45°C. The Timbuktu signpost is free to photograph. Sunday souk is a must-see. For desert excursions, negotiate with local guides. The drive from Ouarzazate to Zagora is about 2 hours through the stunning Draa Valley. Bring plenty of water and sun protection.
