Volubilis is Morocco's most spectacular Roman archaeological site, a UNESCO World Heritage site that preserves some of North Africa's most impressive Roman ruins. The ancient city was the capital of the Roman province of Mauretania Tingitana and flourished from the 1st to the 3rd century AD. What makes Volubilis exceptional is the extraordinary preservation of its mosaic floors — many still in situ — depicting Roman gods, mythological scenes, and daily life. The site stretches across a fertile plateau overlooking the surrounding countryside, with the Moulay Idriss Zerhoun village visible in the distance.

Hire a guide at the entrance for the best experience — the site is large and the guide brings the ruins to life. Visit in the morning to avoid midday heat. Combine with a trip to Moulay Idriss, a holy town 30 minutes away. Volubilis is 30 km from Meknes and can be visited as a half-day trip. Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat — there is little shade.
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most pleasant temperatures. Summers are ideal for coastal areas, while winter is perfect for city tours.
