Tetouan, known as the 'White Dove', is a city in northern Morocco with a stunningly well-preserved UNESCO-listed medina. The medina's whitewashed buildings, intricate doorways, and lively souks are among the most authentic in Morocco. The city's close proximity to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta and its history under the Spanish protectorate have given Tetouan a unique blend of Moroccan and Spanish cultures.
Tetouan was founded in the 14th century by the Marinids but was destroyed a century later. It was rebuilt in the late 15th century by refugees from Granada (Spain) who fled the Spanish Reconquista and the Inquisition. These Andalusian Muslims and Jews brought with them their architecture, crafts, and culture, which remain defining features of the city today. From 1913 to 1956, Tetouan served as the capital of the Spanish protectorate in Morocco, leaving a legacy of Spanish influence that is still visible in the city's language, architecture, and cuisine.

The best time to visit is spring and fall. The medina is compact and easy to navigate compared to Fes or Marrakech. Tetouan is less touristy than other Moroccan cities — a refreshingly authentic experience. Spanish is widely spoken alongside Arabic. The city is 1 hour from Tangier by car. Try the Tetouani pastries, which show Andalusian influence.
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most pleasant temperatures. Summers are ideal for coastal areas, while winter is perfect for city tours.
