Tangier is a legendary port city where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea and Africa meets Europe. Its strategic location has made it a crossroads of civilizations for millennia — Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French all left their mark. The city has a cosmopolitan, slightly bohemian atmosphere that attracted artists and writers like Paul Bowles, Tennessee Williams, and the Rolling Stones. The medina climbs the hillside overlooking the port, while the Kasbah offers stunning views of the Strait of Gibraltar. The Caves of Hercules, a natural sea cave shaped like Africa, is a must-see on the Atlantic coast.
Tangier was founded by Phoenician traders in the 5th century BC. It was a Roman colony (Tingis) and later came under Arab control in the 7th century. From 1471 to 1662, it was Portuguese, then passed to England as part of Catherine of Braganza's dowry before returning to Morocco in 1684. In 1923, Tangier became an International Zone governed by multiple European powers, attracting spies, artists, and exiles from around the world. It was fully integrated into independent Morocco in 1956. This unique international history gives Tangier its distinctive character.

Spring and fall offer the best weather. Tangier is easy to reach by ferry from Tarifa (Spain) — just 35 minutes. The best views of Spain and Gibraltar are from the Kasbah. The Caves of Hercules are best visited in the afternoon. Watch your belongings in the busy medina. Try the local pastries — Tangier has a unique fusion cuisine.
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most pleasant temperatures. Summers are ideal for coastal areas, while winter is perfect for city tours.
