Merzouga is Morocco's most famous Saharan destination, a small village at the edge of the Erg Chebbi — towering sand dunes that rise up to 150 meters high and stretch for 30 kilometers. The golden dunes create one of the most spectacular landscapes in North Africa, especially at sunrise and sunset when the colors shift from gold to orange to deep red. Camel treks into the dunes, overnight stays in luxury desert camps, sandboarding, and stargazing under some of the clearest skies on Earth are the quintessential experiences. The nearby Lake Dayet Srij, a seasonal salt lake, attracts flamingos and birdlife in winter.
Merzouga was long a stop for caravans crossing the Sahara, but the village itself developed more recently as travel to the desert became accessible. The nomadic Berber tribes of the region, particularly the Aït Atta, have traversed these dunes for centuries. The development of 4x4 vehicles and paved roads in the late 20th century made Merzouga accessible to travelers, transforming it into Morocco's premier desert tourism destination. Despite tourism, the area retains a strong connection to its nomadic roots.

The best time to visit is spring (March-May) and fall (September-November). Summer is extremely hot (40°C+). Winter nights can be very cold — bring warm clothing. Book desert camps in advance. The drive from Marrakech takes about 8 hours — consider a multi-day tour. Bring a scarf or shesh for sand protection. The desert is a fantastic location for astrophotography.
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most pleasant temperatures. Summers are ideal for coastal areas, while winter is perfect for city tours.
Many nationalities, including US, UK, EU, Canadian, and Australian citizens, do not require a visa for stays up to 90 days. We recommend checking with the Moroccan embassy in your country before travel.
