A city at the foot of the Middle Atlas mountains, gateway to the Ouzoud waterfalls and the fertile Tadla plain.
Beni Mellal is a city in central Morocco situated at the foot of the Middle Atlas mountains, overlooking the fertile Tadla plain. It serves as the administrative capital of the Béni Mellal-Khénifra region and is an important agricultural center known for its olives, citrus fruits, and cereals. The city's crown jewel is Ain Asserdoun, a natural spring that flows from the mountain and waters the surrounding gardens. The nearby Ouzoud Waterfalls, one of Morocco's most spectacular natural attractions, draw visitors from around the world.
Beni Mellal was founded in the 17th century as a military outpost by the Alaouite dynasty. Its strategic location at the crossroads between the plains and the mountains made it an important trading center. The region was historically inhabited by the Beni Mellal tribe (from which the city takes its name) and has a rich Berber heritage. The city grew significantly during the French protectorate and continues to expand as a regional economic hub.

The best time to visit is spring or fall when temperatures are mild. Summer can be very hot. Visit Ain Asserdoun early in the morning for a peaceful experience. The Ouzoud Waterfalls are best visited midweek to avoid crowds. Hire a local guide for hikes in the Middle Atlas. Try the local olives and olive oil — the Tadla plain is famous for them.
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most pleasant temperatures. Summers are ideal for coastal areas, while winter is perfect for city tours.
