A charming whitewashed coastal town known for its annual arts festival, murals, and Portuguese ramparts.
A charming Atlantic coastal town known for its whitewashed medina, blue doors, Portuguese ramparts, and annual arts festival.
Assilah is a picturesque fishing town on Morocco's Atlantic coast, known for its whitewashed medina, colorful murals, and laid-back atmosphere. The town's 15th-century Portuguese ramparts enclose a beautifully preserved medina of blue-and-white buildings, cobbled streets, and flowering courtyards. Every summer, Assilah hosts the internationally renowned Assilah Arts Festival, attracting artists from around the world who paint murals on the town's walls. The beaches are wide and uncrowded, making it a perfect coastal escape.
The Portuguese fortified Assilah in the 15th century, building the ramparts that still surround the old town today. The town changed hands several times between the Portuguese, Spanish, and Moroccans before becoming part of independent Morocco. In 1978, the Assilah Arts Festival was founded, transforming the town into a cultural hub and sparking its restoration as an artists' haven.
