The Hammam is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in Moroccan culture, enjoy a moment of disconnection, and relax under the care of professional masseuses who use only the highest quality, all-natural products.

Hammams, whose origins date back to Roman baths (inspired by Ancient Greek bathing complexes), are easily found in nearly every city in Morocco. It’s worth noting the distinction between public and private Hammams; the latter typically cost more and offer a more premium experience. It’s important to keep in mind that these baths generally have gender-segregated rooms, though private Hammams may provide the option for couples to enjoy treatments together.

Generally, Hammams offer a ritual that begins in what is known as the hot room, where the goal is to open the pores and deeply cleanse the skin. This is followed by a cleansing with natural soap, which provides an even deeper cleaning by removing all impurities from the skin. This black soap (also called beldi) is made with black olive oil. After letting it sit on the skin for about 10 minutes, the skin is ready for exfoliation, which is performed by Hammam staff using a glove called a kessa.

Finally, the ritual concludes in the cold room, where a refreshing shower removes any remaining soap.
